Can the patient use a normal balloon?
No, patients should not use a normal balloon. The Otovent inflation device is a precision medical instrument that is designed to apply a specific pressure to the Eustation tubes. Use of a normal balloon may apply too little pressure, or too much pressure and cause damage.
Can extra Otovent inflation devices be purchased separately?
Otovent is currently only sold as a complete kit containing the applicator and 5 inflation devices.
My patient is worried about Otovent damaging her child's ears?
Should child continue to use Otovent if suffering from a cold?
It should not be used whilst suffering from a bad cold or nasal congestion.
I have tried Otovent myself and found it uncomfortable. I did not like the sensation. Is this normal?
Some people find using the Otovent device overwhelming at first. Because this experience can be too much for some children, we suggest that parents try the device first so that they can demonstrate to their child that it is safe and experience the sensation of pressure on the Eustachian tubes. The child may experience "clicking" or feel movement in their ears. This is a sign that the Otovent device is working.
My patient cannot inflate the Otovent inflation device. What can I do to help?
You can try stretching the inflation device to help them get started. If they are still unable to inflate the device have the parent inflate it for them first.
My patient would like to take the Otovent on an airplane to go on holiday
Otovent may be used on an airplane with complete confidence. It should be used as normal when the child feels the pressure in their ears. Otovent has also undergone clinical trials for treating symptoms Barotitis
Why are there five Otovent inflation devices in a pack?
The Otovent inflation devices are made of natural latex and they stretch as they are used (max 20 inflations per device). Each device should last for 3–4 days.
What is the effectiveness of Otovent?
The clinical data showing the effectiveness of Otovent shows that it works in 64% of cases where the course of treatment is correctly carried out.
How much does the Otovent kit cost?
As expected, on prescription for a child less than 16 years of age, it is free. Over the counter the RRP is £6.97.
