Research* has shown antibiotics are usually ineffective in treating glue ear. After glue ear children have been assessed, there are often few options available and it can often be a case of simply 'watching and waiting'. This is because almost half of all glue ear cases will cure themselves within three months.**
Treatments
It is recommended to try using autoinflation with Otovent during the ‘watchful waiting’ period. If there is no improvement within the treatment period, then referral to ENT specialist is necessary to obtain the surgical treatments for severe glue ear cases: grommet insertion and adenoidectomy.
