Otovent Case Study

Otovent Case Study

Suffering from glue ear is a very common occurrence in children, causing them to experience dulled hearing, as well as potential problems with speech, language and social interaction. Amanda Stevens from Basildon, Essex is one parent whose son, Liam, had serious problems with his hearing from the age of three.

With no previous health issues, Liam even passed his first hearing test. However, once he started playgroup Amanda started to notice strange and erratic behaviour.

Diagnosis

Amanda says: “The playgroup staff found he was not responding properly to them and it didn’t take long before I realised that Liam was having problems hearing. A visit to an ear, nose and throat (ENT) specialist confirmed the extent of his hearing problem and Liam was diagnosed with glue ear.

“Following diagnosis, Liam underwent two operations to have Grommets fitted and initially everything seemed fine, with his hearing improving dramatically. However, after the second operation his hearing was still not as good as it should have been.”

Treatment

In order to prevent him having another operation, Liam's ENT specialist recommended trying Otovent instead. “I noticed a dramatic improvement in Liam’s condition within a matter of days. The transformation when Liam started using Otovent was unbelievable and his hearing is now above average in both ears. I am convinced that without Otovent he would have ended up needing another Grommet operation.”

Amanda has also seen a big change in Liam’s behaviour. “He’s a different child entirely now, and is at the stage where he uses the Otovent as part of his daily routine, without reminders from me, because he actually feels the difference and finds it easy to use. Liam is now eight years of age, plays the recorder and sings in the school choir, activities that were previously out of his reach. The treatment has been remarkable and I couldn’t recommend Otovent enough to other parents whose children are experiencing hearing difficulties because of glue ear, especially before embarking on an operation to fit Grommets.”
